This year instead of a street vault we will be doing a high school heptathlon/decathlon championships.

 

ISU Track & Field will be hosting the high school heptathlon/decathlon championships on Thursday June 3 thru Saturday June 5. Our intent is to host as an annual event. All athletes are welcome to compete. Thursday June 3rd a clinic to introduce the athletes to the events that make up the heptathlon/decathlon will take place with the championships taking place Friday and Saturday.

Clinic Schedule:

Thursday, June 3

1:00-5:00 PM

The clinic is designed to give athletes an introduction to the 7/10 events that make up the heptathlon/decathlon. The clinic will provide instruction on these new events as well as allow athletes to gain insight into events they already compete in.  

The following is a list of instructors/coaches for Thursday’s clinic: 

Dave Nielsen: ISU head coach. The 2000 Track and Field Nike Elite Coach of the Year and a finalist for the USOC National Coach of the Year. Nielsen coached 2000 Olympic Champion and former World Record holder Stacy Dragila. Nielsen also coached Amber Welty to a NCAA National Championship title and ’92 Olympic birth in the high jump. He also competed in the ’76 Olympic Trials. Among his many accomplishment Nielsen is also a published researcher and expert on track and field techniques.

Jackie Poulson: ISU assistant coach. A two time All American, Poulson holds the school records in the heptathlon with 5,573 points and 400m hurdles with a time of 59.61. She competed in the ‘04 and ‘08 Olympic Track & Field Trials in the heptathlon and has competed in the Netherlands, Puerto Rico and Italy. She currently coaches the ISU heptathletes.

Paul Litchfield: ISU assistant coach. Competed in the pole vault and decathlon for the Bengals scoring 7,286 and holds the school record in the indoor and outdoor vault with a mark of 18’ 0.50” and 17’11” respectively. He earned All American honors in the vault in ‘02. Litchfield competed in the ‘08 Olympic Track & Field Trials in the pole vault.

Joe Silvers: ISU assistant coach. Competed in the pole vault for four seasons and decathlon for two. Silvers, an Idaho native, earned his Bachelor’s degree in sport science & physical education sport management with a coaching minor in ‘09 from ISU and is currently working on his Masters in athletic administration. He is a USATF Level 1 certified coach.

Nate Capps: Currently training for the USA Track & Field Championships. Capps is a three time Big Sky Conference Champion in the decathlon and competed in the NCAA National Championships in ‘09.

Levi Keller: ISU assistant coach. Competed as a pole vaulter and decathlete for four years. Levi set the ISU school record in the heptathlon with 5,394 points and also set the school record for career conference points with 61.5. He also finished with a best high jump of 6'9" and a decathlon score of 7,008 points.

ISU T&F Athletes: ISU track and field athletes will also be assisting with the High School Heptathlon/Decathlon Championships. Some standout athletes include Cassie Merkley who holds the school record in the pentathlon and Brad Silvester a conference champion in the men’s indoor heptathlon.
